Roadside Station Kyoda Complete Guide|Your Gateway to Northern Okinawa

Okinawa Travel Guide

Before driving into Northern Okinawa, many travelers stop at Roadside Station Kyoda.

It is more than a simple rest stop. Here, you can prepare almost everything you need for the rest of your trip.

You can:

  • Use the restroom
  • Buy drinks
  • Pick up light snacks
  • Look at local souvenirs
  • Buy discount tickets for popular attractions

Kyoda sits next to the sea, and cars naturally gather here before entering Northern Okinawa.
I have stopped here many times, and I still think it is one of the best places to prepare for a drive through Northern Okinawa.

What is Roadside Station “Kyoda”?

Kyoda is the first Michi-no-Eki (Japanese Roadside Station) in Okinawa.
It is the main gateway to Northern Okinawa.

Here, you can find:

  • Local foods
  • Souvenirs
  • Discount tickets
  • Rest areas
  • Multiple free parking lots (mountain side and sea side)

In 2025, Kyoda ranked 3rd nationwide in the “Roadside Station Ranking” by Jalan, a major Japanese travel review site.

People use Kyoda in many different ways

Every time I visit Kyoda, I notice people using it in different ways:

  • Local people buy vegetables or milk
  • Travelers ship mangoes home as souvenirs
  • Families choose Shisa (traditional Okinawan lion-dog statues) or keychains
  • Some people eat lunch in the food court
  • Some rest for 5 minutes while looking at the sea
  • Some buy one bottle of Sanpin tea (Okinawan jasmine tea) and continue driving north

There is no “correct way” to use Kyoda. You can use it in the way that fits your trip.

Why do many people stop here before going north?

The answer is simple: You can finish all your travel prep in one place.

If you are wondering whether this stop is really worth your time, Why Stop at Kyoda Before Driving North explains why many travelers begin their Northern Okinawa drive here.

If the main parking lot is full, you may find space in the back parking area.
Even a short moment by the sea can help you start your trip with a calm rhythm.

My short visit plan

On days when I do not want to spend much time, I use Kyoda like this:

Park

Restroom
↓
Look at the sea and take a breath
↓
Take a photo
↓
Buy Ebisu Manju
↓
Buy Sanpin tea

Start driving north

Even a short stop helps me start the day gently.

What I saw during my visit

I visited on a July afternoon around 12:30.

  • The indoor food court was full
  • Outdoor seats had space
  • Foreign travelers enjoyed food and shopping
  • Local people bought vegetables and milk
  • Some travelers shipped mangoes home

I bought the popular Choco Mochi. It was soft and chewy with a light coconut aroma.

That day, Choco Mochi appeared around 12:30. The official baking time is 12:30–13:00. If your timing is good, you may get it fresh.

Even when the station is busy, the sea side area feels calmer.

I also use local supermarkets. Some items are cheaper there.
But Kyoda is still useful because you can compare many Northern Okinawa souvenirs in one place.
If you plan to continue driving into remote areas, What to Buy Before Driving in Northern Okinawa also explains which items are worth preparing before you leave Nago.

Sometimes I feel I am not only buying souvenirs here.
I am also buying travel time.

Good to know before your first visit

  • Popular items may sell out in the afternoon
  • Back parking areas are useful during busy hours
  • Rainy days are still fine for rest, shopping, and ticket buying
  • Crowds change by season and time
  • A 30‑minute stop is enough to enjoy Kyoda
  • You do not need to do everything Choose one thing you like, and that is enough
