A short stop to look at the ocean

Okinawa Travel Guide

When you drive north on Route 58 from Naha toward Nago or the Churaumi Aquarium, you will see the ocean many times.
But the driver cannot look at the ocean for long. The road needs attention.

If you feel a little tired, or you want to look at the ocean for a moment, you can stop at the Hamahara (Kamenohama) Parking Area.
It is a small free parking space beside Route 58. There is a shelter with a table and chairs, and you can rest for 5–10 minutes before driving again.

It is a simple place, but that is exactly why it works well for a short break.

What this place is

This is not a big sightseeing spot.
It is a small place where you can stop for a short break while driving north.

Basic information

  • Location: Onna Village, beside Route 58
  • Parking fee: Free
  • Parking spaces: About 5
  • Recommended stay: 5–10 minutes
  • Shelter: Yes
  • Table and chairs: Yes
  • Toilet: No
  • Vending machine: No
  • Shower: No
  • Distance to the ocean: Just a few seconds on foot
  • MAPCODE: 206 286 756*36 (MAPCODE is a number you can enter into many Japanese car navigation systems.)

Nearest toilet

There is no toilet here. If you need a toilet, stop at the Lawson Onna Afuso Store (918-1 Afuso, Onna Village) before reaching the parking area.
If you are driving north, you will pass it about 1 km before the parking area.

Why this place is useful for drivers

Route 58 has many ocean views. But the driver cannot enjoy them while driving.

Here, you can:

Park your car → Walk a few seconds → Look at the ocean

If the weather is clear, you may see Ie Island in the distance. During my visit, the wind was gentle and I could hear the waves clearly.

This short stop gives the driver a chance to stop and enjoy the ocean too.

Resting under the small shelter

There is a small shelter with a roof, a table, and chairs.
The roof blocks the strong Okinawa sunlight. The wind passes through the shelter, so it feels comfortable.

A simple way to use this place:

Park → Walk to the shelter → Sit down → Drink water → Look at the ocean → Take a deep breath

Even a short rest can help you feel ready to drive again.

How to enter from Route 58

If you drive northbound, the parking area is on the left side. You will see the Lawson Onna Afuso Store on your right about 1 km before the parking area. After passing Lawson, look for the “P” sign.

You can also enter while driving southbound because there is no center divider.
But please check oncoming cars and cars behind you.
Do not make a dangerous turn.

If you miss the entrance or the parking area is full, there is no need to turn back — simply continue to your next stop.

Easy for rental car beginners

The entrance is simple. There are no complicated signs or narrow turns.

However, the parking area is small.
If all spaces are full, continue driving to your next destination.

You do not need to swim to enjoy the ocean

You can enjoy this place even without swimming.

Look at the ocean → Feel the wind → Take a photo → Return to your car

This is enough for many travelers.

Walking to the sand with children

You can walk to a small sandy area. When I visited, I saw a family playing near the water.

But please be careful:

  • There are rocks on the way
  • There is no lifeguard
  • There is no shower
  • It is not a managed swimming beach

With small children, I recommend enjoying a short walk on the sand rather than entering the water.

Use the toilet and bring drinks before stopping

There is no toilet, no vending machine, and no shop here.

If you are driving north, it is a good idea to use the Lawson Onna Afuso Store before reaching the parking area.

Bring your drink with you.

How I use this place (5–10 minutes)

When I stop here, I do not stay long.

Park → Go to the shelter → Look at the ocean → Drink water → Take a photo → Take a deep breath → Drive north again

This short break helped me enjoy the drive more, and it may help you too.

About 30 minutes north: Roadside Station Kyoda

If you continue north for about 30 minutes, you will reach Roadside Station Kyoda.

These two places have different roles:

Hamahara (Kamenohama)

  • 5–10 minutes
  • Look at the ocean
  • Short rest
  • A quick break for drivers

Roadside Station Kyoda

  • 15–30 minutes
  • Toilets
  • Drinks
  • Snacks
  • Souvenirs
  • Discount tickets

A possible route:

Drive north on Route 58 → Stop at Hamahara for 5–10 minutes → Look at the ocean → Drive again → Stop at Kyoda for a full rest → Continue to Churaumi Aquarium or Motobu
