  • Nago Shrine
  • Path with stone monuments
  • More stone steps
  • Nago Castle Ruins

There is a small parking space near the stairs, but it is not an official parking area. Parking at the South Entrance is safer.

When you reach Nago Shrine, you may think you have arrived.
But the castle ruins are further up the steps.

There is one rest shelter, so you can climb at your own pace.

Highlights

Nago Castle Ruins are believed to be the place where Nago Aji (local lord) built his residence in the early 14th century.
The stone walls no longer remain, but the shape of the land suggests it was an earthen-style gusuku.

⚠️ Safety Tip for Nago Castle Ruins

The 500 stone steps can be very slippery on rainy days or when wet leaves cover the path. Wear shoes with good grip and use railings where available.

What I Felt When I Visited

  • Many steps continue for a long time
  • Slippery when the ground is wet
  • A simple area with one rest shelter where few people pass by
  • During cherry blossom season, the steps become a tunnel of flowers

Nago Castle Ruins are not a viewpoint, but a place where you can feel the history at your own pace.

After reaching the top, I felt like giving myself a small “achievement trophy.”

The Story Behind This Place

Long ago, an elderly couple in Nago could not go to the port to see their daughter off as she left for Osaka.

To send her a message she could see from the ship, they burned pine needles to create white smoke.

It is a simple but touching story about trying to show your feelings even when you are far apart.

What I Felt When I Visited

The grass was tall, so I could not see the ocean clearly. But after learning the story, I naturally looked toward the East China Sea.

I imagined the couple looking in the same direction on that day.
